I board the plane and Iâm on my way the next day. Iâd only slept for a few hours on Sunday so the minute the flight reaches thirty-thousand feet, I pass out from tiredness. I donât wake until we land eight hours later.
My mother collects me from the airport and drives me home. This really is home. I feel like Iâve left all the bad shit in my life back in England, along with my horrible ex. As we pull into the garage under the brownstone building though, I also feel like Iâve left something good behind in England.
The week goes by quickly. Mom and I do lots of shopping together. Dad is happy to have me home for someone to chat with about photography. The job Iâm on holiday away from in England is as a photographerâs assistant. Itâs quite fun, but nothing I canât do here as well.
Just as Iâm pondering jobs in America, my phone rings. I look down at the screen Iâve perched on the arm of the overstuffed sofa.
The name Brian appears requesting a FaceTime conversation.
Scooping up the phone I dash up the stairs to my bedroom. Itâs funny how Mom and Dad left my room in its uni state. Iâd left the country straight after finishing college, so there are old posters on the walls and the springs in my single sized bed are nearly poking through the top of the mattress. I notice this in the form of a sharp pain in my abdomen when I crash down, tummy first, onto my bed.
I hit âconnectâ on the video call and Brianâs green eyes light upon my screen. âHello, gorgeous,â he says with a smile. âHave you returned from the land of the brave and the home of the free yet?â
This is the guy Iâd had a one night stand with the day before Iâd flown here to Washington DC. I remember that being quite a fun morning. âI think you mean land of the free, home of the brave, but Iâm not entirely sure. And yes, Iâm still here.â
âYouâre a rubbish American, then. You definitely donât belong there if you donât know the national anthem.â
âCheeky!â I exclaim into the phone.
We have a great conversation, Brian and I. Iâm wondering how this is possible. Why did he even call me? Iâd slept with him straight away. Surely he doesnât think too highly of me. And why is it that I find this unacceptable?
âBrian?â
âYes?â
âYou can believe this or not, but I just wanted you know that I never⦠Iâve neverâ¦â How do I say this so as not to sound false? âIâve never had a one night stand before you.â
âCorrection,â he replies. âYouâve never had a one night stand.â
Eh? Whatâs he implying?
âI fully intend to see you again, Kara, if you ever get your arse back here to this country. So you see, what we shared wasnât a one night stand at all.â
Oh joy. Oh rapture. He believes me! And heâs made me feel absolutely wonderful too!
What a guy.
